Even as the global supply chain begins to straighten out many of the snarls it’s experienced in the past several years, warehouse worker retention has continued to rear its ugly head at every step, with a range of issues sending employees looking for other types of employment that either pay them better, offer improved benefits, present career growth opportunities or allow them to feel more a part of the team with which they’re working.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the complicating factors that’s hampering warehouse worker retention, but it’s certainly not the only thing that’s made this quest even more challenging. The push to diversify the workforce so people of all backgrounds are represented can have its own undercurrent ripple effect in the warehouse and navigating through that takes a highly skilled and trained management team.
These factors are just a few ways in which warehouse worker retention has become an unexpected focus area for companies along all levels of the supply chain. It’s an issue that has some tried and true answers and proven techniques, but it requires company leadership that’s willing to listen to employees and incorporate their feedback into corporate operations, and that can take input from an outside firm or a software platform that puts the answers at their fingertips. While investing in new tools always takes some convincing at the corporate level, failing to do so is almost certain to continue the hemorrhaging of talent across the supply chain space to other careers — or to the competition.
